1. Never let it hit the ground! Don’t leave cigarette butts, ashtrays, bottles or cans lying around where they can blow away. Whiteouts and dust storms always happen when you’re not around. If you approach everything you do with this mindset (carrying a MOOP bag, using a mint tin to ash cigarettes, etc.), you will greatly reduce the odds of anything becoming MOOP.
  2. Manage waste throughout the event. Sort your trash. Crush your cans. Separate food waste and dry it in a mesh bag in the sun.
  3. MOOP attracts more MOOP. If you see trash on the ground in BRC, pick it up — the dust quickly makes it hard to spot. Always carry a small bag to collect any MOOP you find while walking or biking around BRC.
  4. MOOP sweeps. Get your campmates together and line up everyone arms width apart along your camp boundary and walk from one side of the camp to the other, picking up any MOOP you see along the way. Do this before you set up camp, during and after the event. Your area should look cleaner than when you got there. If your camp is particularly moopy, be sure to have rakes, shovels and magnet sweepers.
  5. WOOD IS MOOP! Wood is the #1 MOOP issue in Black Rock City. Wood from sawdust, splinters, wood debris and firewood bark poses a major MOOP problem. Help keep the playa beautiful by laying down a tarp or rug under your wood cutting stations and firewood storage areas.
  6. If it wasn’t in your body, don’t put it in the potty! Only single-ply toilet paper and human waste in the potties. Anything else — tampons, trash or baby wipes — will clog the toilet vendor’s hose, resulting in unserviced potties.
  7. If you plan to use a burn barrel, bring a shovel and metal containers to scoop up and remove ashes. All burn barrels must be elevated 10 off the playa surface to prevent burn scars.
  8. Put a weight on or tie down anything that can blow away.
  9. Sort trash and recycling before you depart BRC for easy drop off at collection centers on your way home.
  10. The playa is not a bathroom! Don’t use the playa as a toilet! You can be ticketed! Having a pee jug near your bed will cut down on trips to the potties.
